Joke's on us: An introduction to Batman's deadliest foe

The Joker is one of the greatest comic book villains of all time. IGN ranked him second on their Top 100 Comic Book Villains behind X-Men bad guy Magneto, which I believe is total hogwash. See, the Joker is the worst kind of villain. He doesn’t commit crime strictly because he’s mentally delusional, or because he’s in a state of poverty, or because he’s been raised in a poor environment. He has turned to crime for one simple reason: he enjoys it.

More specifically, Joker enjoys chaos. He seems to find purpose in committing crime and raising hell in Gotham. In fact, Joker is the epitome of a villain who would cease to exist if he did not have Batman to fight back and make his life fun.

In the film, Joker does try to explain himself as he works his evil with Harvey Dent, describing himself as an 'agent of chaos' and not 'a guy with a plan'. It's the best way to describe Joker's reasoning for doing what he does.
